Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the character. Fearing stress, her parents did not want to see the actress pursue acting until she turned 18. Perry admitted that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school. However, she began acting to meet new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry, after graduating from Boston University moved in New York in search of television roles. Perry was able to land small roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness drove her to California in search of theater jobs. Perry was a part of Broadway with her mother in The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. Perry was in the show with their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father played her character in The ABC show Scandal. That same year the actress was selected to play the younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger version of her mother's. The character was picked through an audition, even though she had a close connection with it.
